8 Posts For My 8 Months Break: Part 8

Ready for the last instalment? I sure am!

Alright, 4 pages later and I’m done with all the experiences. I actually tried to put everything I wrote into a word cloud so see what word came up the most but I guess 3000 over words is just too much for the software to handle. So going by gut feeling, some of the key ideas that came up the more should have been ‘opportunities’ and ‘experience’. And this is exactly what I want to focus on more in the last instalment of this series. While I was planning out my 8 months, there was one issue that bothered me a lot more than I thought it would.

It was the issue of experience vs commitment.

Yes you may look at this and question. Over a period of about 8 months, I had like 6 different jobs. So how long did I actually stay at any of them? I had friends who were amazing, staying with the company they were at for 6 months and more.

So for any juniors who may be reading this, yes, trying to find the balance between exposure and commitment is really not easy. But there was this one thing my friend shared with me (and you know I have friends who are way older than me so this is not advice coming from a 20-something year old okay) and I don’t know who needs to hear this but this I want to share with you guys. He told me, don’t worry so much, just go for all the exposure you can get. Commitment should be a consideration after you graduate from uni, not now.

So yes, see it this way. Take your pre-university break as one of exploration. Test out each industry to see what you like and what you don’t like. After you graduate, there won’t be such an opportunity anymore. You have the rest of your life to remain committed to your job and company and to be the best at what you do. Pre-uni is a time for exploration, remember that.

And with that, I consider this section of my life all wrapped up and I’m ready to move on. This documentation will be something that I will look back on one day, but more importantly, I hope that I can encourage any juniors who may be reading this to be brave and take that step to explore when you have the chance to. If there are any of these experiences that might interest you, just let me know and I’ll be more than happy to share more with you, perhaps even pass you some contacts if applicable. If you need a second opinion on your possible choices, I’m down for that too!

What lies ahead of me now is the start of a new 4 years. University. I don’t know how it will go, but I’m excited for what lies ahead. And you can be sure that I will continue documenting my journey as well, so stay tuned!
