Hi guys!
I have been a little busy with work recently, but I’m back with a new post today.
Ever since I started going onto Reddit, it has been an interesting experience, especially seeing so many juniors try to pick the right path for them. I’ve seen a lot of questions so let me address them all here for easy reference:)
Can I get into a JC via Arts stream and transfer to Science later?
This is very school dependent, but my take is that its not likely. One of the main reasons is that there are logistic constraints. There are only so many places available in the labs and lab is actually a very big portion of the A level exams so a lot of emphasis is placed on it and it’s not like 2 people can share one space on the bench.
Another reason brought up by another Redditor is that for most if not all school, the COP for Science will be higher than for Arts, so if you can’t get into the Science stream means you can’t get in, why should you be able to enter via a ‘back door’? This does sound harsh but it is the truth.
I’m missing the COP by a few points, should I still try for the school?
Honestly, why not?
The COP reflected in your JAE booklet indicates ONLY the net L1R4/5 of the last student admitted into the school last year. Sure it gives an indication of the profile of students who tend to apply but there is always a chance that there will be changes. At this point in time, there really is not much you can lose by trying.
So those are the main 2 questions I see on Reddit as of now and I hope that my 2 cents would be able to help some of you out somehow.
That said, O Levels is really only a measure of how you performed last year. The decision you make over the next couple of days would determine your life for the next 2-3 years, but in the greater scheme of things, it’s not gonna affect you that much in the next 20-30 years. Do what you think is right for you and stick it through. Focus on the things and skills you can learn beyond the content.
If anyone of yall would like to talk, feel free to just contact me. I may not be the most experienced person but I’ll be happy to share my views and work through your choices if you need another perspective:)
I’ll also be happy to answer any other questions that come up! If I see any other commonly asked questions on Reddit, I’ll also come back to address it here.
Whatever happened, know that you gave it your all and that there will always be a path for you out there. You just gotta find it.
Cya next time!!
