‘Don’t be emo’

Hey guys,

So this is just something I really want to say, a societal observation I’ve made if you really want to label it.

If you’re following my personal account, you would know that I absolutely love quotes. I follow a lot of quote accounts, and what I like to do with my account is that I repost quotes that speak to me on my story and I highlight them. So just as a measure, I currently have 6 highlights that are completely filled and I’m filling up my 7th.

So as a result of that, so many people have DM-ed me at one point or another asking me if I’m alright, whether I need someone to talk to and etc etc. SO MANY. So what I really hope to achieve is to explain that once and for all.

So what happens was that this whole obsession started when I was going through a hard period of a time. I was trying to forget someone who was never mine to begin with and there really weren’t many outlets that helped people step through that kind of period in life. Hence I found an outlet in quotes. Well I also found solace in a number of articles I saw on Thought Catalog. I reposted those on my facebook page so who knows why no one has ever bugged me about those.

Anyway, I started to follow quote accounts left right and center and I reposted those that spoke to me.

You know how there’s a saying out there that on a girl’s account, certain quotes and status message and even the bio is written for one specific person to see? Well, that was me for a while, while I was trying to get over the whole issue.

So that was how my quotes obsession started, but right now, it has evolved. The kind of quotes I repost have grown together with me. I have matured from the girl I was when I first started posting quotes, but my love for quotes has remained the same. These quotes have helped me through difficult times time and time again, and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

If anything, these quotes have helped encouraged people without me even knowing. I once had an old schoolmate (I don’t even think we were ever classmates, we were just in the same school at a point in time) DM me to say thanks for reposting all those quotes, they really helped him a lot.

So really, while I mainly post them for myself, I appreciate knowing if the content I choose to have on my platforms helps any one of you. I more than appreciate if you’re just checking in on me to make sure I’m alright. Who knows when I’ll go back to that dark place I try so hard to stay away from. But what I really don’t appreciate is people telling me not to be emo. Being emo is not a choice. It is a state of mind that one often has not control over. No one ever chooses to be emo for no rhyme or reason. If anything, reach out a helping hand and help those who are feeling down. They might not admit it out-rightly but they need your help.

So please, this week, this month, show a little more kindness to the people around you and be less critical of their choice of content. If their content bothers you, who’s stopping you from unfollowing them?

Till my next post, cya:)
