Hey guys,
We all know that art exists in many different forms, from theatre to oil paintings and whatnots. Some of us (like me) may not be very artistically inclined but no matter how much we claim not to be able to participate in creating art, there is one form all of us enjoy, A LOT. Well, most of the time at least. This form is the art of speaking.
I don’t think I need to dwell on the power of words; we all know the power of words, be it good or bad. Words can encourage the heart, but words can also kill. As the holiday approaches, many of us will be going overseas on what I like to call a retreat. As the holiday approaches, I would like to highlight this issue, in hope that the increased awareness will help those out there like me, whose moods are ruined by this one type of people who have yet to master the art of speech.
Let’s take a quick look at this scenario:
Jill and her parents are going away on a holiday to the USA at the end of the year. Her extended family are ‘notified’. But there is one emotion in Jill that is felt more strongly than the others. Excitement? Nope. It is Irritation. Why? Because ever since news of their travel got round, her uncle has been sending them all sorts of travel info. Information on the riots in the streets, information on the earthquake that is coming, information on the terrorist attacks.
Now, I understand that before travelling, it is important to roughly know what to expect, the popular scams that occur, the dangers to take note of. But is it necessary for this information to come from others? Are these not news reported on television, on the net? Are your family members illiterate? My point is, CAN THEY NOT READ UP ON THESE ON THEIR OWN?
Having grown up in a predominantly Taoist family, a Chinese family, there is the existence of what is fondly known as ‘cheok‘, meaning to say, just don’t mention the bad things that could happen, ie. natural disasters, especially before one travels or embarks on a journey. Just don’t. It doesn’t help anything.
The fact is, we are aware of these things, these events, these disasters. We know.
You don’t have to tell us.
So this holiday, let’s strive to achieve this together, shall we?
If you have nothing nice or constructive to say,
DONT’ SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.
Happy Holidays folks!
Okay so if you’re wodnering why the timeline of this piece is kinda weird, it is because I migrated this from my previous site. This was originally posted on 16/11/2017, so hopefully that clears any confusion.
