Casual Racism

So the story is that we have been talking about racism during lessons in school so this was originally an assignment I had, but I thought it fit pretty well here too, so here it is!

Topic: Is Casual Racism Acceptable?

Whether casual racism is acceptable or not depends on who one is conversing with. In the company of friends, casual racism is just another form of social interaction. After all, those are people whom you have known for some time, people who you know you click with, people with the same frequency, and more often than not, share the same sense of humour as you. While it is acceptable to make racist jokes among your friends, it is far from okay to go out there and poke fun at everyone you see on the street. Strangers are strangers. No matter how cohesive our society is, how strong our social fabric is, how tolerant our people are, there is a limit to everyone’s patience. One of the most important things that make our society unique is our diversity. But with diversity comes differing views, differing ideas and differing tolerance. What is deemed as acceptable to one may not be for another. In general, it is best to just let sleeping dogs lie and not do ridiculous and potentially insulting things to test the patience of those you do not really know. After all, why disrupt our perfectly good peace and harmony?

Right, so that’s my stand. What’s yours?
