Chapter 5: A New Friend
Wednesday, 2nd October 1998
Today, I had been showing the new student around the school. His name is Jeremy Whitehouse. Lots of girls, except me, were gawking at him and wishing they had been assigned to be his buddy. He had sandy hair and baby blue eyes, so naturally lots of girls were attracted to him. Their boyfriends were giving him mean stares as he sat next to me. “He is kind of cute, you must admit,” said Cynthia.
“Oh no. Don’t tell me you are head over heels for him!” I shrieked, “Daniel is going to be so mad,” I groaned.
Daniel is Cynthia’s boyfriend. Cynthia kept silent as Professor Gaia had already started lessons. You guessed it, Herbalogy, Although I always had good grades in the subject, I found it very boring. I sighed over my notebook and began writing down the methods on how to plant Mandrakes.
Soon it was Potions Class. I was trying to mix my “Hair Growing” potion properly when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and Professor Gaia had come back to tell me that Jeremy would be assigned to be my buddy for the Heralogy project. We would be staying in the forest for ten days to collect samples from all the plants. By the time the camp finished, we would be graded. I went back to mixing my potions and this time, Professor Chingleton came to tell me that I would be Jeremy’s partner for the whole year.
“Okay, do you want me to help you with anything?” Jeremy asked shyly.
“Yeah. You can get the 5 Silver Violet petals from the cupboard,” I said with a smile.
He blushed and quickly ran to get it.
Thursday, 3rd October
OMG!! Cynthia said that Jeremy likes me! I mean, although I know that I have honey-coloured hair and ocean blue eyes, I don’t think I’m that attractive, right? Anyway, there are lots of other girls out there who are more attractive than me,
Today at breakfast, I noticed that he kept blushing when I talked to him but kept his cool when Cynthia or other girls talked to him. I decided to consult the ‘boy expert’, Judy. I mailed an owl main to her and she immediately replied.

Just start exchanging family backgrounds first, then, probably he won’t get that shy. It happened to me and George too. Try to get to know him better during your camp for your Herbalogy project. Don’t change your style, it looks cute on you.

Urgh! Why must she always put the kiss hug, kiss hug, kiss hug thing after she signs her name? It’s so mushy! I wonder how Mr George Washington copes with that?
Friday, 4th October
Okay. I certainly need to chill. Breathe in, breathe out. Breath in… okay, okay! Wake up Kate! Sorry diary, but I’m a but excited. Jeremy gave me this sparkling floral bracelet and asked me out, I owl mailed Judy on what to wear tomorrow but she asked me to main Shiloh instead. Shiloh is THE fashion expert and definitely knows what to wear on a date.

Wow! I know the perfect dress for the occasion. You know that multi-coloured floral dress Aunt Christine gave you? Wear that and bring the lacey while cardigan that came along with it. Oh yeah, wear the bracelet he gave you to show him that you appreciate it.
